Table Runners - Linens As Functional Centerpieces
Table runners can make your tables come to life. Table runners, also known as runner runners, are a functional addition to any dining room, especially if you enjoy entertaining. Table runners are suitable for special events when you want a more refined approach and are practical for everyday use. A table runner improves your tablescape in both dramatic or subtle ways, depending on the final color and texture you select.
Most table runners are made from fabric. This fabric may be as basic as the finest linen and lace, or it may feature vibrant, rich hues like the silks and wools that are so in demand today. Tablecloths are also used as table runners, and they are most often used in formal settings such as in an opulent dining room. The materials range widely, with the primary fabrics being either linen or silk. Linen tablecloths are usually quite elegant in appearance, but the woolen varieties are always more attractive.
For a small table, a cotton table runner or a flannel sheet works well. Larger tables generally have a necessity for runners of some kind to accommodate the extra weight. Tablecloths can be almost any length; a common practice is to measure the length from one corner to another and then to divide by twelve to get the distance between adjacent corners. If the table runs six feet from side to side, the runner should be eight feet across.
Three-inch squares of fabric are usually the smallest mix things you will find. Four inch squares are the medium and larger size mixes, while six and ten inch squares are the largest size mixes. Some tables may even need borders along the perimeter to keep things in place and maintain a consistent decor. Using a quarter inch border along the bottom third of the table and then one inch borders on either side and two inches on top makes a visually pleasing effect that can be quite attractive when used around dining tables.
One great tip when decorating your dining room table linens is to use different colored table runners than what you use on your dinner table. Using the same colored pattern on your dining room tablecloth as you use for the tablecloths gives a nice visual flow to the room. You can also match up colors for your table runners if you have a few of them match, but using different ones will make your room look more individualized.
Many people find it easier to buy fabric for their tablecloths at the same place they buy their table runners. This makes it easy to coordinate the two. You can usually find the exact pattern you want for less money if you know where to shop. You may also find that the fabric you buy is slightly cheaper because of the way the stores sell it; if you shop in different places, you can save money by buying in bulk.
There are many benefits to having matching tablecloths. If you have several identical round tables in your home, using the same runner on all of them gives them an appearance of being homed in together. It also makes it much easier to coordinate your chairs and lamps. People who do a lot of entertaining at their homes also find this useful when it comes to matching sets of table cloths and table runners. Having matching pieces of furniture around the house makes decorating much easier.
Table runners can add visual interest to your rooms, while also providing a functional purpose. You don't have to have circular tables to take advantage of a runner. They come in any size or shape and can be used with many different type of tables including rectangular, oval, round, and square. You can even use accent pillows on round tables to bring the entire table setting together.
