Salt & Pepper Mill Sets
In case you've never bought salt & pepper graters before, it can be quite intimidating. After all, they're pretty big and take up quite a bit of space. There's the handle, then the shovel that needs to fit in a little underneath the grill (if you have one), then there're the rack and the counter space needed to keep everything organized and to keep the items from sticking to each other as you turn the handle. It can be very difficult to learn how to use one, and even more difficult to master. So how do you get started?
The first thing you need to think about is what you'll be using your salt & pepper grater for. Will it just be used to grate your own herbs and spices? Or will you be making pizza sauce from your peppers and spices? Both are great ways to use the product, so there's no reason not to start small. With these in mind, you'll have a better idea of what kind of set to buy, and you can make a decision based on that.
If you'll be making lots of homemade meals with your salt & pepper grater, then it makes sense to go with one with several separate pans for different applications. There should be a thin metal plate for your pan, as well as another for each of the pans to melt into. When you get into the process of actually cooking, this will help prevent burning your food or scorching your fingers. You want to be able to transfer the hot spices directly onto the hot plate or pan you're using, without having to chase your burning pan across the room. Just make sure you clean your salt & pepper grater off immediately after use, otherwise your food will be cooked with all of the original flavor.
Another popular type of salt & pepper grater that's popular with serious cooks is a rotisserie set. These are designed for roasting, slow roasting, and deep frying. They come in all kinds of styles, from elaborate multi-tiered designs to more simple, flat units. These units are usually larger than their pan counterparts, and they allow for a lot more control over the heat levels and the duration of your cook time.
The most common salt & pepper grater are a hand crank model. Hand cranked salt & pepper graters are ideal for large batches of any kind. Because they are manually turned, they are also much easier to clean up afterward. Hand crank models tend to use larger amounts of salt and pepper than their counter top or pan counterparts, so they also tend to be a little more expensive than other types. Some of these hand cranked units include a warming element, which is great if you often need to bring food from the fridge to the oven. Of course, this factor also means that you'll need to put the warming element on the front of your burner.
The final type of salt & pepper mill set we'll discuss are those that use electricity. Electric models give you the same kind of control as the hand crank, but they don't tend to work very well for larger batches. Most electric salt & pepper graters are either very hot or too loud for most kitchens. Also, these models can be more expensive than other types.
Another option for salt & pepper graters is a combination unit that combines a grinder and a sous vide cooking circulator. These types of units combine a sous vide cooking chamber with a reservoir that holds water to heat it. In the past, these pieces were exclusively used by chefs in high end restaurants. Modern versions are much more affordable, and they work very well for everyday kitchen use. While they don't heat up as much as the electric models, they do maintain a very high quality level. Best of all, the majority of restaurant sized salt & pepper graters now use a combination of electric and gas power, saving even more money on your energy bill.
Salt & Pepper Mill Sets come in a variety of sizes and prices. You can choose the one that's right for your kitchen. It's important to remember though, that while you'll get a great deal on any salt & pepper grater, they're not inexpensive. This appliance can end up costing you nearly a thousand dollars over the course of your lifetime, so it's definitely worth spending a few extra bucks on a reliable piece of kitchen equipment. If you're ready to upgrade your kitchen, consider upgrading your salt & pepper grater!
