Garlic Presses - Manual Vs Automated
A garlic press or garlic crusher is a handheld kitchen appliance to easily crush garlic cloves with ease, usually by pushing them through a thin grid of tiny holes, typically with some sort of rotating drum or pin. There are several different types of garlic presses. Some even come with an automatic shut off to prevent the garlic from clogging. These devices can be used for pressing whole cloves and also for squeezing fresh squeezed garlic from crushed cloves.
One of the most popular garlic presses is a hand held model that looks like a blender. It has a long handle and a small hole on top, but it can fit into your kitchen drawer. Many garlic presses have a device similar to a garlic bulb, with a long narrow grid of sharp pins for extracting the cloves. Others come with a bulb attached that you remove by hand to insert the garlic. This method allows you to press the garlic without having to use any sort of bulb.
If you're pressed for time, you can always cut the garlic into smaller pieces before removing them from the garlic press. You should not try to squeeze the garlic cloves while they are still in the pressed state. This can cause damage to the garlic by crushing the garlic pulp. Garlic presses do not generally come with a blade or shredder. Some models come with a plastic blade but many others come with no blade, making this appliance more suitable for home chefs who like to experiment.
Some manufacturers design presses with two separate chambers for grinding and squeezing garlic. The chamber with the garlic cloves can be unscrewed to squeeze the garlic. The grinding chamber must be fastened to the garlic press with metal screws. Most garlic presses have two speeds: low speed which crushed the garlic with little noise; medium speed which is noisy but results in more cloves for your mixtures. The type of garlic press also affects the price - some are very expensive.
Garlic presses need to be used properly in order to get the best results. It's important that you avoid pressing too much garlic because it results in a loss of moisture in the garlic. This results in the clogging of the gutters and may result in pungent smell coming from your garlic. Garlic presses shouldn't be used on raw garlic as it destroys the enzymes in the raw garlic. For best results, garlic should be made into a paste with the use of a garlic press. Garlic paste can be used for several things including making breads, sauces and dressings.
One of the disadvantages of a garlic press is that you can't get to all of the cloves. Some people find this limiting. Another limitation is that you can't keep it sitting around outside all the time. Once you use it, the garlic clumps that collect on top of the garlic press tend to fall off so it's really only good for making one kind of food. The advantage is that it produces a lot of garlic and a large number of clove size pieces.
Most of the garlic presses are made to fit on a table top. A rolling pin can be used to manually turn the garlic clumps while it's being ground. To avoid having the pressed garlic fall off, you can hold the rolled garlic presses against the wall while it's being turned.
Manual garlic presses generally aren't as expensive as you might think. Most of them come in a range of about $30. There are some that have extra features like a chopping board, a shredder, a sieve and a strainer. If you want an all-in-one set with all these features, you can spend a lot more money. If you want to save some money and simply want to make garlic by hand, buy a manual garlic press and you should be able to grind your own garlic at home.
